Rhodesian Ridgeback

One of the breeds I listed in my favorites was a Rhodesian Ridgeback. In my career with dogs I have only met a handful of Rhodesians but the ones I have met I have fallen in love with. Here is a little background on the breed;

  • They were bred to be good family protection and loyal hunting dogs, one of the main game they would hunt were lions.
  • They have developed the nickname the African Lion Hound.
  • They were bred to have enough stamina to keep up on the hunts, so they are a very high energy breed.
  • They are extremely intelligent and highly trainable.
  • One unique feature of the breed is the ridge of hair which grows forward on the back only.
  • They got recognized by AKC in 1955.
This is Zola, she is a Rhodesian Ridgeback that comes and boards where I work. She is a great example for the breed, as she has the ridge of hair on her back (which is quite soft), and she can run for days! Although sometimes her running looks more like a deer frolicking through a meadow. She also knows when to be a mellow girl, and go take a nice power nap before her next adventure.
